Inside Out 2 trailer unveils an array of fresh emotions and sparks countless worldbuilding queries

Pixar unveils the latest additions to the emotional roster in Inside Out 2 after much anticipation. The initial teaser showcased Anxiety (played by Maya Hawke), poised to navigate Riley through her tumultuous teenage phase. Now, Anxiety introduces her cohorts in the latest trailer: Envy (portrayed by Ayo Edebiri), marveling wide-eyed at the world around her; Ennui (embodied by Adèle Exarchopoulos), settling lazily onto the couch with a disgruntled air; and Embarrassment (played by Paul Walter Hauser), a towering figure sporting a rosy blush.

Alongside the familiar emotions — Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Tony Hale), Anger (Lewis Black), and Disgust (Liza Lapira) — the newcomers must navigate Riley's journey through her first year of high school. The challenges of adolescence loom large.

Curiously absent in adult minds, one can't help but wonder: where do these additional emotions go? The original film hinted at glimpses of other characters' emotional landscapes, yet the trailers only depict the standard quintet. Are Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment exclusive to teenage experiences? What becomes of them afterward? Do they merge with the primary five, or do they vanish altogether? (I wouldn't mind living in a world where adulthood equates to shedding anxiety!)

True to Pixar form, the trailers raise a plethora of intriguing worldbuilding questions. Will these be explored in the movie, or will Inside Out 2 become a tantalizing enigma like Elemental, akin to the new Cars?

Inside Out 2 arrives in theaters on June 14th.
